Mima’s Story
XIALUO, China—“My name is Mima. I’m 7 years old. I go to the primary school in Xialuo, my hometown. I am quite fond of books, but my parents cannot afford them.
In May of 2006, my family got two heifers with babies from Heifer, who came to our village. After the two lovely calves were born, Qiongda, my younger brother, and I can have fresh milk every morning! Qiongda would always licks the bottom-up glass and thinks back about how sweet the milk was. Mama told us, “Be good and I’ll buy you the books after selling the ghee.” I had been counting the days for this.
Later on in October, Mom joined Heifer's Women’s Weaving Self-Help Group. You see the beautiful woolen hat on me? That’s one piece of my mom’s works!

Yudren, Mima’s Mother and WiLD Award Winner
Yudren, 38, is the leader of a women’s weaving self-help group since October 2006 and was awarded Heifer’s Women in Livestock Development Award in 2008.
Her family received a cow from Heifer in 2006. When the cow was about to give birth, she would take care of it in turn with her husband at night. “When the calf was born, seeing it come safe and sound, I cannot help my exciting tears.”
The economic returns to Yudren’s family have repaid their hard efforts. Up until now, her family has honored their commitment and fulfilled two pass-ons in 2007 and 2008. The one during Pass on the Gift Month will be their third!
“I used to have a lot of dreams, but not knowing where to start from. I’ve learned a lot from Heifer, such as Cornerstones, livestock raising and weaving,” Yudren said. “I’m now working together with my team members in playing a bigger role in our market. And we’re confident!” |
